Be cautious about whom you partner with or hire. I started a consulting business with a good friend/former coworker whom I hadn't worked with directly. Great friend and excellent at her job. Our visions for the company seemed to align. Started to realize she was going along with things and not speaking up when she didn't disagree, among many other operations-related issues. She had terrible anxiety that required her to have certainty and control over every small decision, which conflicted with the fact that we were equal partners. We should have "interviewed" each other first and done a trial project together first.
Also, look into your city's resources for small businesses. My city provides free coaching sessions and 2-10 hours of free accounting and legal consultation when you're starting out. There are also tons of local, state, and national grants to apply for as women and if you are BIPOC. Everything from $5K to set up operations or $20-50K for hiring more folks.
Get insurance to cover you I case clients don’t pay. Keep a job or make sure you have a 6-12 months of funding runway at least. It takes time to get clients, and then takes time to get paid for work done. This timeline grows with bigger companies. It’s not uncommon to have a 6 week process to get onboarded as a vendor, then invoicing after the first month of work, then getting paid 30 days later.
Figure out what people will pay you for, not just what you think they need or what generates interest. Interest/applause is basically worthless if it’s not backed by willingness to buy.
