I think so many variables are involved. I’m a recruiter/Sourcer and my intention could be to call the candidate by a specific date as mentioned but then the day comes and the hiring manager hasn’t given feedback, or hasn’t made themselves available to discuss next steps, or the requisition is still needing approval and more information is needed, or things are moving slower than expected and we are unable to. Add that to the fact this isn’t our only requisition we are dealing with 20+ at one time which means about 10-20 strong candidates per requisition. I think it comes to being realistic on what expectations can happen and really believing that we will respond when we get an update. We just do not have the capacity to check in every day unfortunately. It could very well
Be an issue of needing more staffing and support, but all that to say it’s not as simple as candidates make it out to be and I say that as an individual who has been on the other side wondering why I haven’t gotten a response yet. It’s really humbling to be on the technical and administrative side and just realizing the ball is only on our court…about 20% of the time. Either way, wishing you the best of luck.
Absolutely, I work with higher band levels of recruitment and it still happens there, so it’s not an exception at all. I think there needs to be realistic expectations made on recruitment teams in terms of balancing producing quality work and this entails maintaining that warm connection with candidates by being as transparent as possible with timelines. I see some requisitions last as long as 4-5 months for the entire process from start to finish..it’s exhausting as a recruiter and I imagine on the other side it’s equally as exhausting. I hear ya! :( it’s very frustrating
Same.
Latest one I dealt with made a big show of saying they’re supportive and communicative on the job ad, emails, and screener call. They tell me they’ll send through my take home assignment by the end of the week, but 2 weeks go by and after 2 follow-ups with no response, I tell them “I’m sure your time must be scarce”, “if I don’t hear back in a couple of days I might have to prioritize a few of my other streams”, “hope you find a fantastic fit” (i.e. you’re not what you’re advertising yourself as, stop wasting my time, good luck).
I’ve dealt with rockstar recruiters and they’re worth their weight in gold: if they can handle prospects respectfully and be reasonably communicative, then I see no reason to put up with time wasters.
Keep at it OP, WGMI 🚀
Wrong time to want to get into technical recruiting. Business development or sales recruiting at the moment.
Im sorry to hear this is something you’re going through. I went through the same before becoming a recruiter myself and vowed to not treat candidates this way and to just be upfront. I would say 100% of the time and if they didn’t communicate anything different by the end of the call like they are awaiting the req to be approved or to schedule your interview with a HM, move on. It’s unfortunate that some recruiters aren’t as transparent.
Thank you! I’m glad that ur a transparent recruiter who understands. That gives me hope. We need more recruiters like you.
