I am really struggling with perimenopause (brain fog and lack of energy). Any suggestions in how to survive at work at an executive level during this difficult stage in life?

The amount of information and fire drills coming my way continued to elevate my stress level and issues with sleep. It was a circular spiral that was difficult to manage when coupled with the physical and mental effects of menopause.

I retired. Almost immediately, the brain fog lifted. Memory retention is back to normal. My skin and hair are a healthy glow again and I’m sure that my frequent smile reflects my state of mind. I can’t tell you how glorious and relaxing life is. I really didn’t think I would retire until well into my late 60’s. Did the math down to the detail and was pleasantly surprised how prepared I was financially. Best decision ever!!!! Life saving, really.

MD2, retirement planning is multi-dimensional. There is no “one big number” that will inform the decision. My firm (Deloitte) offers a wealth planner and projection tool. I completed it in detail about a year before making the decision to retire, met with an internal firm advisor and my private advisor (granted access to the tool). This gave me the information and confidence to retire. The process also gave me a better understanding of the components and options available with my firm’s pension, medical insurance, and best timing to minimize taxes.

Read Estrogen Matters and talk to your doctor about HRT. It’s life changing (though not a panacea for every issue).

Like MD1, I eventually chose retirement. Yes, there was financial fear, but it was far outweighed by the fact that I was slowly killing myself. For about 18 months before that, I made significant daily changes (which I didn’t announce and went unnoticed by peers and others):
1. Focused on consistent sleep quality, which meant I disconnected no later than 7p daily.
2. Made every Friday a focus day with no meetings, only exception was a clear client crisis/issue or people issue that I could not delegate. I typically spent this time on walks where some of my best thinking happened. I was able to start the following week with less brain fog and emotional weight.
3. Started seeing a longevity doc who helped me dial in nutrition, supplements, and assess my overall health. We’ve been tweaking every 3 months and I get a blood panel 2x/year to see how things are changing.

I wish you clarity as you come to the decisions that are right for you. After ~9 months of post-retirement rest, I’m just now ready to launch my own venture and take on a light portfolio of work.

I agree with Managing Director 1 above that decreasing your stress levels if at all possible will greatly help. I know not everyone can retire but that is what I did because it was just time. I noticed once the stress was gone I felt a million times better.

Working with a female Functional Medicine Doctor has been a game changer for me. Supplements, blood tests, increased weightlifting (affects memory/brain support), getting good sleep. An Oura ring helped me a lot too in seeing my data. It’s still a challenge but noticably less.

what supplements if i may ask?

i take omega 3, vit D, chondroitin/glucosamine and collagen for joints

HRT was the answer for me. Cured my insomnia, hot flashes, moodiness, and vicious headaches.

Thank you for the insights. Something to consider for sure.

HRT,
and also blood test for vit D, thyroid, iron, ferritin, cholesterol, glucose, sex hormones

Anyone used a somatic therapist? That’s the next thing I’m looking into. Currently, I take estroven (supplement), daily physical activity of some sort, and drink soy milk while tracking protein intake. Oh and started a food delivery system a month or so ago focused on anti-inflammatory diet.

So far it seems to help. Sleeping better gut feels less bloated, and my mind is more clear.

Hungryroot. It’s been a game changer. Simple throw together meals and can adjust the cost based on how many meals or or snacks etc.

I have not been diagnosed with ADHD. I definitely fit some of the characteristics that go unnoticed in females. The good news is if i do have ADHD, it makes me quite good at my job as I’m very flexible and can provide positive energy to my patients. Anyway, my boss has told me I have ADHD multiple times. It seems rude when she says it, and she follows it up with “I say that because I love you” which i feel is so unprofessional all around. Anyone have guidance on how to handle this?
