I agree she should have acknowledged your email. Perhaps she realized that when you showed up in person and that rattled her. In any event, it sounds like a good idea that you didn't take a job there.
Yea they made me feel stupid when she looked at me and said "well I got your email you declined, I didn't bother responding because I just assumed you wouldn't show up."

Tbh I think you have done the right and decent thing by emailing back and being honest to not waste their time. But I probably would've left it there honestly to avoid an awkward conversation in person. Just like the other person said though, sounds like you dodged a bit of a bullet anyway!
