I came back to my firm 6 weeks ago after a 8-mo. maternity leave and could sense my firm thought I wouldn’t return even before I went on leave. Prior to leave, I had set a lot of boundaries throughout my pregnancy, which was not taken well. I was planning to not return, but changed my mind because I intend to leave at some point next year as it works better with my schedule. I haven’t been getting much work, despite asking for it (billing 3-5 hrs daily). How long do I have before they let me go?

I don’t know but I say start looking/applying. It can take a few months anyways which would put you at a next year start date.

Agree with the advice to start looking. You may be able to negotiate a severance package with a few months while you look for a job while still technically employed, but best not to plan on it

like

Could you share what boundaries you set during your pregnancy and how that was received? Asking as someone in their first trimester really struggling to keep up. Haven’t disclosed yet, but might within the next couple of weeks.

Those are some pretty intense boundaries. It’s not surprising people didn’t react well. As a mom of 3, I also protect my family time as best I can, but also realize I need to be a little flexible if I expect to stay at a firm. Not sure what law job you could have where you’re truly only available for 40 set hours a week, but maybe it’s out there.

like

They didn’t react well, but because of that, that’s why I’m leaving.

I’m not sure if saying it’s for mental health would help depending on the firm. Also, usually reducing workload isn’t for the entire pregnancy, but for the last month or so. I’m not surprised the “boundaries” weren’t received well.

like

Do you work in the U.S.? Some of these bowls are international. It sounds like you had a reduced workload for 9 months and were on maternity leave for 8 months, which isn’t the standard in the U.S. for law firms.

I would disclose as soon as possible.

I think the harm is already done.

And to answer the specific question, they probably have already started looking for your replacement and when they find them, they’ll let you go. Depending on how specialized your practice area is / what the market is like in your area, that could happen tomorrow or in 3 months, no way to know.

Choose people that choose you for who you are and respect your boundaries
Fuck the rest
Your peace of mind, your mental health ,your child ,your family comes first, you come first !

You are a very well education woman,a wife ,a mother a great friend I assume , it's time to take your powers back !
Do not allow anybody to mentally drain you ,you have enough on your plate !
Best wishes girl
