I finally pushed back on an offer instead of accepting it right away, and they came back with a 14% increase in less than 24 hours. The key was asking for a specific number and tying it to market data instead of my personal needs. Wild how much money I left on the table in past jobs just because I didn’t ask.

WOW! Look at you! Good for you for pushing back. I always tell people, you have to negotiate. You don't want to leave any money on the table.

It’s certainly stressful and risky!

Congrats! Thats good to hear. What sites did you use for your market research? My company has their own ranges they go by for each role. Most internal job postings don’t show the salary range.

It's great that it worked, but I've always been wary of relying on market data. In my experience, organizations don't want to get involved in a discussion about what another company might be paying, or what is considered standard in the industry. I do agree that people should always try to negotiate whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I hear you that’s where I was nervous too

That’s fantastic!!

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

What would everyone think would be a good salary for a senior manager of digital product and strategy for an established fintech company? Comparably has 179k base as the median. Recruiter mentioned 173 as their all in top.

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
