I got laid off last year and was hired as a marketing manager (and the only marketing person) a few months ago for a small company in the U.S. There’s very little actual marketing work to do in our company, and I dabble with graphic design, website management, and hiring through different channels on my own. Sometimes, I feel like the luckiest person to earn as well as I do with such a limited workload, but other times I wonder if I'm stunting my own growth. How would you approach this?

I would suggest approaching it as a learning opportunity. Many marketing roles have become jack-of-all-trades, requiring you to pick up these skills rapidly. Have fun testing out various marketing channels. Because you are worried about stunting your own growth, take some time to create a learning plan for yourself.

Join a marketing association to network and learn from your peers, and sign up for classes to advance your learning. As you learn, you can try those skills on your existing role, or see if that takes you in another direction.

So my suggestion: make the most of it and take it day-to-day. Drive your learning and over time, you'll figure out what you want to do next.

I am really sorry to hear about the layoff. Honestly, in this job market I would be content where I was at. However, if you are not growing professionally and that is important to you then it might be time to look for something else.

You are in the BEST position. I started my career off in a similar role and was able to grow in the direction I wanted by having the freedom to look for gaps, and learn the skills to fill them.

I agree with the above! This feels like such a good place to be. You get to learn new work and grow your skills for future jobs. You could also discover a new specialty that you’re interested in! But either way knowing so many skills only strengthens your resume.

Awesome that you can dabble in all sorts of things. At big companies, people forget how to be-scrappy when something is always someone else’s job or department. The hardest part will be staying current and access to the trends, research and general resources that are available at a big company. So I’d suggest you make sure you’re investing time on that. Good news is at a smaller place you have the opportunity to experiment without tons of red tape and can learn with speed and feel the impact more quickly
