I had a recruiter screen for a job that I'm pretty excited about last Friday. When discussing the salary range, they shared that the salary range posted was also inclusive of a variable bonus amount. Which is to say, the upper end of the salary range ISN'T the highest possible salary, but rather the highest possible salary + bonus amount.

This feels a little bit like bait and switch. What do you think? Big red

If the range posted includes the bonus that does seem a little unethical. A bonus is not guaranteed, depending on the conditions, so including it really isn't right. Speaking realistically, the upper ranges of a salary band are generally unattainable anyway, so adding the bonus numbers to it probably doesn't change things. I mean, it's a higher number that no one is going to get, that's what it comes down to.

Yeah, that can definitely feel a bit misleading. It’s good to clarify whether the top of the range is base salary or base + bonus, makes a big difference when you’re comparing offers.

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
