strange that lead expects this. Is you lead a dev? and is he/she not contributing to designing this entire setup with you?
Irrespective of what you do, do the job hunt in parallel. Upskill not for your lead, but to make yourself more employable. Keep asking to be staffed in billable project. That is safer for you untill you find the next job.
yes agreed, Thank you
8 yoe with 25 lpa for only backend developer is actually good if I may say so.
Here are some pointers to help you in the future:
1. Become a Polygot: Get other stacks rather than a single stack. If you are currently in java, then try dotnet or if you are feeling ambitious and willing to take a bet, then try to learn golang or rust or python. (reason for the adjective is that these are way different from java/dotnet)
2. Become a Fullstack Engr: Learning frontend is not so bad. It will serve you in the long run to know both BE and FE.
3. Diversify into Infra Engg: Learn some kind of cloud-infra stack. The true meaning of "DevOps" (as opposed to an infra skillset) is that one can then make choices based on the constraints (like features, system's requirements, etc) and grow into a solution architect.
