Go to an ABA rated school. Make a portfolio of writing and drafting assignments based on several different areas of law. LEARN TO WRITE. I mean really write in a logical and sensible sort of way. Value the expository format. Learn the rules of court and discovery. LEARN HOW TO PLAY DIRTY FAIR.

A paralegal certificate is good in any field. Project management is an excellent place to put business, real estate and contract law to use. Municipality job? Administrative law for sure.

Good luck!

Agree w P1 re ABA-approved school and writing samples. Equally, important, a school that will provide great networking or job placement opportunities.

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.
