Whats PDP-GrowthINV ?
Hi, I am new to Canada and currently living in Vancouver, BC. I was looking for opportunities in the Financial Services industry in the Metro Vancouver Area. I have about 3 years of experience in the Banking/Financial Services and HealthTech industry and worked alongside IBM and PwC in developing and implementing cutting-edge FinTech products for business clients of a Financial Institution and led the Finance and data science team at a Health tech startup. Let me know if anyone can help me.

Corporate paralegal here. I do initial drafting of a lot of documents (consents, APAs, redemption agreements, etc.), corporate formations, UCC filings, run reclines, create closing checklists and closing binders, and more. I honestly think any new field is hard to break into because attorneys don't want to teach. They just want people who can jump in and go.

I completely understand that. I was quite lucky in that I got my first paralegal position with zero previous legal experience for a small firm, in a generalist role. And I learned so much, so fast, and was able to move on to a bigger firm as a corporate paralegal in a year. Training is difficult, but I have to imagine there's a lot of people out there that would be incredible corporate and IP paralegals if they were just given a chance.
I was a litigation paralegal who pivoted to a corporate paralegal. It helps that my (smaller) firm had attorneys who do both and I just kept picking up more corporate work and doing well at those until I asked to only do corporate work. IP feels like a more specialized field. It is indeed hard to get that foot in the door but easier to move around after that.
That’s a good way around it!
As an IP paralegal a lot of the day is spent following up with clients and requesting instructions for deadlines, preparing and filing documents with the USPTO, verifying docket dates (non billable), as well as drafting memos. In my case I started out as an IP assistant and then became an IP paralegal
I’d like an answer to this also (T&E trying to switch!)
Not so much at my firm 😭
I started as a legal assistant for an IP group in corporate law. I’d look at those type of positions to get your foot in the door!
A lot of those positions require extensive experience (from the jobs I’ve been)
