By remembering that the first 1-2 weeks are like that. I wouldn't adjust the seats any more than absolutely necessary, and if the rosters are printed, I would simply pencil in the changes. I would (perhaps only in my head) schedule a seat change for 2-3 weeks from now when schedules have calmed down, and I have learned a few things about my students. It doesn't have to be major, but I now know that Tommy can't sit near Freddy, or Jane needs to be near the front.
You were having some attitudes, if I remember correctly? The seat changes can help you on that front as well. Try to figure out your leaders. Focus on them a bit. Keep them for lunch detention if their behavior warrants it. Use that time to enlist their help to make class run more smoothly. Middle schoolers can be very practical. They know the difference between a pleasant class where we have time to do the fun things and an unpleasant class where the teacher is spending the whole time on discipline so we cover only the basics. Acknowledge their leadership abilities and ask for their input on seating. Pay attention, even if you don't end up using it, because it will be valuable intel. You can even offer the kid a deal. If I see this behavior for that time frame, you can sit in this seat that you prefer instead of the other seat that you will hate. Or whatever other concession that doesn't bother you but would make their day. Once you get your leaders swimming with you, many of the others will fall into line.
Remember. kids this age love anything that feels like power because they have so little of it, at least in their view. So use that to your advantage! Even if it's an illusion...

Thus is my first year to grow flowers other than marigolds. I'm hoping for enough to at least put some on my desk at school.
Do one thing at a time. The beginning of the year is always filled with changes and different things going on. However it will soon fall into place, and everything will be on schedule.

Here's to hope! Our registrar swears that after tomorrow everything should be pretty much settled.
