10 years in consulting and to this day LEK is still by far the worst place I ever worked in my life. Those were some truly dark, dark days of sweatshop level misery and psychological abuse
LEK perspective here. Are you sure they're equivalent pay?
AC base is $135k base, with max $30k performance bonus and 20% profit share. Key word is max, because somewhere in the fine print: you only get $15k of your performance bonus for 4/5 performance and $3k for 3/5 (middle bucket). Since you're a lateral hire, I wouldn't bank on getting a 4 or 5. The first 5% of profit share also goes to 401k (not match, it's our only contribution). Leadership has already hinted at this year potentially being challenging. If we assume 8% profit share, that's only 3% cash.
Expect to make $140-150k. Typical week is 9am - 12am Monday to Wednesday, 9am to ~6pm Thursdays and Fridays.
30 minutes for lunch, 1 hour for dinner, and maybe 1 or 2 personal time blocks sprinkled into the week are perfectly fine, but otherwise expect to be working non-stop. This isn't IB, where the hours are bad, but you might have downtime while waiting for MD feedback. It's team norm to ping anytime you're away from your desk for extended periods (e.g., 20+ minutes)
Dear god do not come here it’s not worth all the money in the world
Pro
I hear HORRIBLE things about LEK but have not worked there so will defer to those who do
Save yourself. Don’t come to LEK. Especially at that level youll be put on a lot of responsibility and I know the support system to see folks succeed is no longer there
Just search this bowl for LEK and for Altman and determine which place you’d like to work 🤷♀️
There’s limited info on AS tbh so right for OP to post
Don’t let the social media fool you. Of course LEK is better.
Was at LEK for 2Y and left to buyside. Totally echo everyone’s sentiment above re: hours, pay, culture.
To highlight a positive though - exits are really great, especially if you’re interested in buyside or corporate Strat. Recruiters have told me that they’ve heard of LEK’s sweatshop rep and view it as a plus when viewing your potential as a candidate bc they know you’ve been in the trenches
As an leker who recently left, I think the fishbowl stories are very much biased toward those with particularly bad experiences. I averaged 55 hrs / week while there and had a great exit. I’d hazard that the great exit opps may be worth a 1.5-2 year stint - even if it does end up being higher hours.
LSS track C2 recent exit here — also can count on one hand how many >65h weeks I’ve had
Depends on your sector — you mentioned TMT, we do a lot of DDs and fewer strategy projects from what I see. I’m in life science which is where most of our strategy cases are.
Wlb is covered above, and I’m biased in LS but I had a good exit. Have never heard of Altman before so ymmv
Providing AS viewpoint here - I think all that’s been said about LEK applies to AS. Similar hours and pay
Come here if you want to specialize in TMT, go to LEK if you don't know what you want to do.
We don't have OBS so an average week is 9AM to 9 or 10PM Mon-Thu, or 11PM if you took some time out for a long dinner, hit the gym, walk the dog and so on. And shorter Fridays. So an average of 55-60 hours a week, but with a ton of variance, which sounds like it's the same at LEK.
Is lek hiring experienced hires at the moment?
