I've always heard things like that as "don't call us, we'll call you." Perhaps I'm wrong about that, but I don't think it's a good idea to count on something happening with them. Make sure you're looking elsewhere. If you hear from the people with your resume, that would be great, but you should still be casting your net elsewhere.
I once applied for a job somewhere I really wanted to work for. I hadn’t heard back after 2 weeks or so, I showed up in a shirt and tie and for the next two or three weeks with a resume in hand that first time I went in to follow up. I got to know the hr hiring manager. They pushed me through and I got the job.
A year or so later me and that person were pretty tight. I was basically told one day if I hadn’t shown such resilience and yet respect in my follow ups I wouldn’t have gotten that job.
I had that job for 5 years or so and followed that person to another store (retail). I trusted and respected them as they took care of me. I always gave them my best in return. That was on the best relationships in a professional work setting I ever had.
I’m not saying that consistent follow up will work always and I’d like to think I have a knack for being the type of person that can make that style of follow up work. But it worked for me and it was a job I seriously wanted and loved for years. It got me through college and into accounting.
Not stopping by a retail store is a lot easier than knocking at the office door. Especially in a post Covid world. But just because you don’t make the best first impression or blow someone away in an interview doesn’t mean it’s game over.
You have to be careful how you play it and read a room but follow can change the course of your future. Some people and I think the people who you want to work for will respect it.
Think of it this way: you’re not working with them now. If you annoy them by following up, you still won’t be working with them. No loss/no gain. However, if the follow-up is well received you could be in a better position.
I would do a single follow-up. Not annoying at all if you keep it simple. I've had companies come back months later and say something opened up. You never know, but definitely keep searching like this one is done.
