I have taken the train and bus for the past 8 years. It was strange at first, but became easier after 2 rides. The TAP card is easy and can be a card or mobile app. It is a great workout if you take the stairs and makes you connect with the city.
Most inconveniences are a dirty train car or bad body odor. There have been a few questionable people with a knife or smoking or drugs, but these are rare. The worst experience was getting punched. Out of 8 years I have only had 7 of these experiences.
That is a great trade off considering there's a monetary and sanity saving by taking the train. Traffic accidents are more common than transit issues and violence. Road rage has also become more prevalent. The more people that take public transit the safer and better it will become. It takes community engagement, patience, and appreciation for those around us.
The train or bus gives me the opportunity to play games, read books, watch TV, and more. Many times I save time as well by commuting by transit vs driving. Use the Transit app and Google maps for pretty good transit arrival times.
We in the Transit industry will continue to expand and improve on future services. Hope this helps.
Hi, I was born and raised in LA. I’ve lived in Mid-City, Koreatown, South Central, and Inglewood. I’ve been taking public transport since middle school—kind of normal for those of us born within the city. If you’re from the suburbs like Torrance, Downey, or the Valley area, it’s a different story. I used to take the Green Line from Compton to LAX, then the Big Blue Bus to Santa Monica. It took around 2 hours, but I’d do my homework or read a book on the train and bus.
I just sold my car and moved back in with my parents in Watts. Now, I take the Green Line and Metro bus to Marina del Rey, where I work at OMD.
I started taking buses and trains from Del Rey to El Segundo for work earlier this year, and it has been an easy transition. I also started taking buses to get other places around LA, and found that not only is it cheap, but the schedules are extremely reliable. You will definitely see some homeless folks, and some people doing drugs, but the same goes in virtually every other major DMA in the world.
