I also always worry it puts a target on your back after the fact because they know you were looking. I’m always prepared to leave.
Yes but...if they'll match it to keep you, why aren't they already paying you that?
Exactly. This is why I would never stay for a counter offer.
If you’re going to do it, be ready to walk away from your current job if they don’t match, no matter what.
Yes it happens. Sometimes that’s the leverage your managers need to fight for more.
But… it’s never a guarantee even if they WANT to match and keep you. Be prepared to leave.
It definitely puts a target on your back.
It used to happen a lot but now, at least where I work, it doesn’t happen at all anymore. I don’t know if it’s a policy, but I’ve seen some talented people walk out the door.
You can play this game, but you really have to be ready to leave. Assume they’re not going to counter offer to get you to stay.
Yeah holding companies want people to leave on their own - no severance and then they can fill your spot with someone desperate who needs less money. That’s the script right now.
100% puts a target on your back
Never ask your current employer to match an offer unless you’re prepared to leave.
If you have another offer on the table, make sure it’s one you want. It’s entirely possible your current job will absolutely refuse to counter. If I were you I would ask someone in confidence about the company’s counter-offer policy. Someone you absolutely trust.
It’s a conversation you can’t un-have.
