Moved from Europe to NY and I couldn’t be happier. I come from a great country but there’s nothing like foreign energy that feeds your soul and keeps you optimistic about the future. I’ve always been an outlier in my home country and I finally feel like I’m seen for who I really am, far from home. NYers feel like my people.
It will be sad for me when I go back. (In a few decades, family duties)
It wasn’t great the whole time though - it took me a while to find the right job/industry/team. It changes everything. When I hated my job, I couldn’t wait to get out of NY. Now that I love it, I love NY again.
I did 3 years at my first agency. Had an O1 then asked for a green card as soon as I got there (best advice I was given - you get your freedom, it can take a year and a half). Freelanced for 2 years and now I work in house at a startup, been there 1 year. None of this would’ve happened without the green card! A lot of my friends are trapped at their agencies because they don’t have one.
I’m just over 8 months in from NYC to Europe. Moved because I badly needed a change and this job opportunity came up. So burnt out from the agency NYC work culture. I loved it here in Europe initially, especially since I had so many family and friends visit. And summer here is magical. But now reality sunk in and I’m having a bit of mixed feelings due to cultural and language differences. And I miss my people so so much. I think I should have done this when I’m much younger / earlier in my career because I feel at this point in my life I want a bit more stability. However I appreciate the adventure, the novelty and the challenge. Living here is still feeling like a long working vacation 🙃 since it was such a big move for me, I feel like I gotta stay here for at least 5 years and see! Or move to another European city.
CW1 What made you feel that the world back home is moving on....? What do you mean by that? Like you're getting behind with what's happening with your home country? Or like you're not seeing growth as compared to your home country?
I know a few people who move abroad because it was the other way around -- they felt like their home country was making their progress delayed. But I don't want to jump in assumptions here. Just thought I'd share the other side of the coin.
I moved to NY for work, and after a few years and agencies found that it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. I’ve become increasingly socially isolated (though make friends easily at work) and miss the lifestyle of my home country. I’d love to move home if only I knew there were enough jobs. At this point I feel like all my experience in NY will be wasted as I’ll probably need to change careers to have a decent income/enough opportunities. It was good for a little while though...
Where did you move from, if you could please share that detail (at least the continent)? I noticed that people from my country, when they move abroad, they never go back because of the exact reason you mentioned -- all experience would be wasted. Those who move abroad, they shine and become bigger compared to when they left.
I'd love to hear anyone's stories. Why did you decide to move? What was the deciding factor? Did you regret it? Did you come back home after some time?
