Hi Sherri. I was in talent acquisition for several years before transitioning into project and change management. I now do résumé and interview coaching on the side because it is something I am still very passionate about.
Identifying your own transferable skill sets can be challenging when attempting major career path changes. Knowing how to communicate those transferable skill sets to recruiters and hiring managers on a resume is often even more challenging. Working with a professional résumé coach or professional resume writer will definitely help you. Since you’ve always been self-employed and never had to write a resume before, I would highly encourage you to work with a professional resume coach and writer.
In today’s job market, a recruiter spends an average of 8 to 10 seconds looking at a resume, and most of them can look at 200 or more resumes a day. Depending on the industry, it could be 2-3x that. Having a strong resume that will make them stop and pay closer is vital. A résumé coach can help you create a résumé that will do that.
Yes, I spent most of my career providing career coaching/resume writer and it is well worth your money to hire a career coach. This is especially true when changing industries. Career coaches will help you effectively translate your experience to the new industry you want to go to. Also, a good career coach will help you prepare for interviews. Recruiters only look at a resume for about 10 seconds and you want to make sure they can easily see how your background fits the position.
Hi @sherri Reid
Inbox me. I can help you :)
What are you looking to move to?
Sherri, if you use ChatGPT you may have to play around a bit with various prompts to get it to create something that suits, but even then it can not look quite right. I often get it to create a resume and then use a “humaniser” ai to make it look more authentic and not like it was written by C3PO 😊
I was going to suggest Chat GPT but since you didn't like the results. I would try finding a resume writer on Linked in or Upwork. There are plenty of good ones out there.
