I am really sorry you went through this. HR can attract power without accountability, and that can turn toxic fast. Being let go due to personal dislike is devastating. Speaking up matters, even when it feels risky.
Unfortunately, this happens all the time at different companies. If you live in an at-will state, they can let you go at any time just because they don’t like you. I’m really sorry that happened to you.
Don’t worry it’s not you. I’ve seen this happen repeatedly over my 40 year career. Excellent people pushed out simply because they made a suggestion, queried a decision or weren’t ‘liked’ by a senior workplace sociopath. We are all at risk of this in every job. I’ve seen whole teams gotten rid of because a person like this wants to bring in their cronies.
It happens more places than you realize. Leaders often influence this. I’ve seen it all!! Lol
Sorry to hear that, it sounds like a horrendous experience. I've heard wild stories of HR departments that were like the internal affairs cops in bad movies, always scheming and creating drama for people. And, to be honest, bullies can turn up anywhere in the corporate world, it's just a personality type that occurs. I've dealt with bullying personalities and just had to navigate around them. It shouldn't have to be that way, but it happens.

I’m so sorry you experienced that, it’s a real shame but you’re not the first and definatly not the last! It can be a regular thing that happens unfortunately! Don’t let it be a reflection of you though, stay positive!
I’ve worked for multiple companies during my career, and my experience has shown me they are everywhere. But so are there some very good leaders. Critical to find that space where you can embrace all types. It’s all situationally-based.
And sometimes it is about needing different skills, having people skills, having a different attitude or not being accountable. I had an HR assistant, and at first they seemed they had the basic knowledge, and good HR instincts. I have been working with them, giving them advise, explaining why something needs to be handled a certain way, just sharing everything so they can learn the day-to- day everything. After a year of giving them the chance to use people and communication skills, I realized they are not capable of understanding the “ why” behind a task. This does not help them understand. I can’t get them to learn and remember. I had to take them off projects that they were doing wrong and remove them from calls because they were not making sense on the calls. As I gave them more responsibility, I realized they did not have the skill to do more. They are okay, but just not what is needed long term. I feel bad because they tried and I was willing to mentor them.
