My husband isn’t that close to his sister and she has 2 kids. They call me Aunt but if I ever refer to them I always say “husband’s” niece/nephew. We’re not close to them and we live across the country so we don’t spend time with them (we still haven’t met the 2yo IRL). I think it’s different if they’re kids you know/spend time with.

I think this has a lot to do with it. I have only seen his nephews maybe 2-3 times over the course of many years. We don’t spend time with them or really know them at all.

Girl, for better or for worse… they are your family.
You might have different relationships with them, but they are still your family.

Did you grow up calling your aunt and uncle that were married your aunt and uncle? Or only your dad’s brother was your uncle? And his wife was your uncle’s wife, not your aunt?

It was more about feelings than words. I realized what I really was feeling is that I am not close to his family at all because we never see them. I don’t think of them as family because I have only seen them a few times and barely know them. They truly are acquaintances to me.
So, I understand this was kind of a dumb post originally because my thoughts were not really fully formed but reading the responses and answering the questions helped me understand what I was feeling and put better words to it, if that makes sense.

Umm what?

My wife and I have three kids. Her brother and his wife have three kids. Our kids are cousins. We are family.
You know how family trees work right?
Let’s go back to the basics. Draw a family tree. Do your in-laws appear anywhere on the family tree?
Technically and genetically speaking, they’re your husbands family. But since you’re married to your husband, they are a part of your extended family by LAW. If you divorce your husband, they’re no longer your family. Now, whatever you feel or see them as is your business.
My cousins from my mom stayed in contact with my dad after my parents split. He was a very kind generous good man; they told him no matter what happened he would always be their uncle. Family is so much more than just blood
💯 our family

I do not. It drove my ex crazy. They were her family, not mine.
That’s your niece/nephew if I read that correctly

SA1 I think adopted kids are part of the family. That’s the whole point of adopting them.
SAP1, I could love a kid from a husband’s prior marriage, but didn’t have to face that so don’t know for sure.

I say “my wife’s niece or nephew” or “my uncle’s wife”. My wife is biracial. I think people would look at me weird if I pointed to a little white kid and was like “that’s my nephew”
You definitely don’t need to “other” your nephews because of their skin color 🙄

Unfortunately, yes.
Family. What's yours is mine.

Uh, OP, did you just ask if we considered our nieces and nephews family?
Yes. Yes, we do.
