Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?
Can anyone share their experience with an ESOP?

The vast majority of people who accept a counter-offer still end up leaving within the a year. I know you're saying it's only the money that has you looking elsewhere, but inherently underpaying people shows a lack of value for them. So is it possible it's money AND that their underpaying you is de-valuing you?
I would say take the other offer; your company is unlikely to match an offer that much higher than what they pay you now and it will put a target on your back as a flight risk.
I don’t think it’s negotiating in good faith to ask again so soon
I agree.. questions you should consider.
1) When they updated you so quickly.. was it due to you were underpaid and they got caught?
2) Is the offer at the other company normal or an exception and above average? If above average - whats the catch?
3)Why was your current company not keeping up on wages for your role to make sure it was fair?
Just remember the hard part - what is the culture at your current company worth in $.
If or when you leave relationships with others there will end quckly... The current company is not family .. they hired you to complete tasks effectively.. Thats a contract they would terminate if needed with 2 weeks or less notice.
How certain is the other position? Would you enjoy working there the same or more than where you are now? What is keeping you from jumping over to the new role right now?
For what it’s worth, I’ve heard companies often will salary match to retain an employee, only to lay them off in the next round, as they’ve identified themselves as “unreliable”.
Personally, most people work for their income, if you can get paid more elsewhere, you should take it.
These are all really useful points, thanks so much!
You stay or go, but you can’t ask for another raise just after you got one
No you can't use it for leverage. Just remember, "the grass always looks greener on the other side".
BEING HAPPY AT YOUR current job is a huge plus since there is no guarantee that will be the case with the new job. It probably won't be. That's just the way things usually work out.
That’s really tough….it would be very hard to negotiate again in such a shot amount of time. How do you feel about the new role?
