Who’s putting you on the spot? Because if it’s your boss or someone on your team you should discuss how unprofessional this behavior is. But beyond that, you never want to flat out say you don’t know or aren’t prepared. Use more creative and flowery language. Like, interesting question, let me confirm with my team and make sure I’m providing you with accurate information.

My boss. 🫠 I told this person I know the presentation was terrible and need more time to prepare for things like that.
Yes I had to bs my way through it was absolutely painful.
So what would you do if they asked you to present upfront slides of a deck that you have only seen once before?
In these situations, it’s usually better to strike a balance between honesty and confidence. If you don’t know something, you can acknowledge it while showing how you’d handle it, for example: “I haven’t prepared a presentation on that exact topic, but here’s how I would approach it…” Why do you think these on-the-spot presentation tests have been coming up more frequently in your calls lately? I had a new manager who loved to “test” us constantly.
