It wasn't until after I was out of boot camp. Before then, I only ever saw the guy when he looked ready to bite your head off... but later, I actually felt kind of grateful for (most of) what he put us through. We came out much stronger than when we arrived two months earlier. Can't say I really wanted to grab a beer with the guy, but hell, he did his job and did it well.
I've always been good at making connections with people so it was really weird, he came just as close as possible to having no personality except anger. At least that's how it looked to twenty-one-year-old-me. Looking back I can see that a lot of it was probably a mask. Because NOBODY can be that mad for that long without ending up in prison.
It's a pretty common misconception that they don't feel compassion; of course they feel it, can't help it. But they are trained extensively to break through every recruit's tough-guy act and show him that he isn't "too good for" anything, whether it's running five miles just because or polishing the floor with his bare hands. That's the first thing you have to learn: Follow. ALL. Instructions. It's impossible to teach people to do that unless you scare them within an inch of their life
