I once applied for an internal role and wasn’t sure how much room there really was to negotiate since I was already on the team. It felt different from negotiating as an external candidate. Have you had success negotiating salary for an internal move? What worked for you?

Yes, I knew my market value because I had been headhunted for a role at another company where I had interviewed but then they had a hiring freeze. I was able to quote the salary they would have paid me in the context that they had asked if they could call me once they had approval to hire again. It was not too much more than I was being offered for an internal promotion (5% more) and I think it was approved because it was a reasonable ask.

That’s a great point about market value coming from external perspectives

I totally understand that. It does seem really hard to negotiate internally because they kind of just tell you this is what the salary will be. I have never negotiated but it definitely happens.

Appreciate this perspective!

Internal is usually lower

Not to mention- when I brought this to my principals attention he said I might have to take Covid leave. Covid leave only lasts so long- correct? The. What do I do?

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

Hi all. I just received an offer for $130k and will be eligible for about 29,000 shares of stock options. The vesting schedule is 1 year and then quarterly thereafter.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
