I once saw this happen at a job and it really stuck with me.
Someone who’d been there for years got passed over for promotion, and the job went to a fresh grad. Then management asked the same senior person to train the new hire for the role they were passed over for.

They refused. After that, they weren’t fired but suddenly theywere left out of projects, meetings, and decisions. Workplaces don’t always reward loyalty the way we think they will.

Have you ever seen something like this happen?

I've definitely seen variations of this throughout my career. But I also think it's important to leave your ego to the side and just do the job you're hired and paid for. If you feel disrespected, you can always leave and find something else. But refusing to do part of your job because you don't like a decision that management made is just a way to set yourself back and prove them right in the decision not to promote you.

That’s a fair point. Sometimes it really is about focusing on what you’re there to do.

I hear that. It’s eye-opening when you’re actually going through it.

I've never seen that exact thing happen, but I've seen examples where someone was perceived as being disloyal in some way and they were made to pay a price. There can be pressure to be a team player, and if someone just doesn't play along they'll wind up with their hours being cut. Or lousy assignments will be given to them. Some managers can get really petty about stuff like that.

like

Yeah, that definitely happens in some workplaces. It can get pretty petty.

I’ve seen something similar, it’s for sure opened my eyes that no one is dispensable and loyalty doesn’t always pay. I’ve also seen a handful of undeserving folks receive promotions because they were close to the right people.

That’s such a tough realization. Loyalty doesn’t always get rewarded the way we expect.

Yes I have to many times.

Same story in a lot of places, unfortunately. You start noticing the pattern after a while.

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
