I remember my old days working at a restaurant as my second job. I’d work eight hours at my first job, then take three buses for two hours just to earn $8 an hour. The worst part was my boss kept all the tips, saying he wasn’t making enough profit like it was my fault. It felt like pure exploitation, but I stayed because I needed the money. Eventually, I quit and moved on to something better.
Have you ever had a job that felt more like an exploitation?

Isn’t it illegal for managers to keep tips from their employees? I know they have some leeway to distribute tips among the staff, but they’re not allowed to keep tips for themselves or as a mode profit.

Honestly, I've worked for small family-run businesses for most of my life, so all of my jobs have felt this way. It isn't nice...

It definitely is not nice. You are giving your 100% to the job and if you are unhappy looking at your paycheck, it is not worth.

A part-time restaurant job in high school was awful. We also didn’t get to keep our tips and missed so many paydays because business was slow. I was fortunately able to quit shortly after graduating high school.

You can not stay very long for these types jobs if it is not paying you enough. I am glad I was able to quit that job too.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?
