I spent a full hour crafting one sentence ... pacing, cutting, reshaping. It had rhythm, clarity, flow. Then it got deleted in two seconds with the comment, “Can we dumb it down?” a lot of strong writing gets gutted because we stop trusting the reader. When do you push back, and when do you let it go?

That reminds me of the Oscar Wilde quote, about how he spend the morning putting in a comma and spent the afternoon taking it out. Sometimes it's just like that. But if you're working in a professional capacity you simply can't get too enamored of your own prose. I think a lot of current writing has been sabotaged in the clickbait era. But, it also needs to suit the purpose, and the people who call the shots decide that.

I totally relate to that Wilde quote. But sometimes I wonder.. why are we dumbing things down instead of pulling readers up? Not every sentence needs to be spoon-fed. Have you ever pushed back and won?

That is literally the worst. I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. I think you learn to pick your battles and really only fight for the things you feel very strongly or passionate about.

Yes! Learning which battles to fight is a skill in itself. But it gets frustrating when the line between “feedback” and “control” starts to blur.

I feel like that comment is completely unfair to your hard work- I agree with the other comments though that you sometimes have to pick your battles!

If I truly believe the sentence carries weight or captures the voice perfectly, I fight for it but only once. If it still gets cut, I let it go and save it for something else. Do you ever recycle your best lines?

Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. I'm a reporter with more than 32 years of experience and I feel that, lately, local television news has been kind of dead, but I am pleased to fight for it from my local newspaper. Locals love to see someone from their own town succeeding or finding out something inspiring.

I am a firm believer that this will not change for a long time, local TV will continue to live as long as we stand for it.
