Recruiters are almost always the opposite of helpful. Try to avoid them unless you have no other choice.
I have good experiences with recruiters of course it depends on the roles they have but do both don’t count out the recruiters because it’s easier to get a job when you have plenty of offers on the table which you can get through recruiters.
It depends. In my case, I actually lost an offer because my name was still listed under a headhunter’s representation from months ago. I didn’t think it would matter, so I applied directly months later. The firm ended up canceling my offer because they realized I was still tied to that recruiter and didn’t want to pay the fee. So yeah after that, I would just apply directly to the firms.
I haven’t found most of them to be very helpful. Several were trying to get me to apply to jobs that were worse than what I have now and that paid less.
Just realize that they work for/get paid by the company and not you. I think it can be useful to use one, but not at my level.
I recommend treating recruiters like an extra channel, not your whole strategy. Keep applying on your own, but let a couple of the solid ones send opportunities your way. Sometimes they know about openings before they even get posted, which can give you a jump on the competition.
I have experienced helpful recruiters but also some that just wasted my time. Many recruiters have no clue what you did in your job. I worked in financial services for many years. Some people think I formally worked as a bank teller.
I have had good experiences with recruiters in the past, though this time around they seem like a completely different group of people. They are LOVING that it's an employer's market and ghosting is the norm. I wouldn't avoid them completely, but don't invest too much time and walk if the recruiter is unprofessional.
