I started working 4 years ago for a small insurance carrier (~250 employees, 50 in resolutions). We were told to expect only 2 people to get promoted in our dept per year, regardless of extra work. It’s a great company, but I worry as a 28 y/o that I’m going to hurt my long-term career/salary.

How often do you expect to get promoted at small companies? Is working at a company like this early in my career going to hinder my career/salary if I seek to change companies in the future? Thanks!

I think it's a good goal to try and get a promotion every 2-3 years. I wouldn't say that it's necessarily going to hurt your career in the immediate sense but if you stayed there a long time without a promotion it could hurt you. Keep your eyes open for other opportunities!

Yes, that was definitely my goal when I first entered into insurance and did it at my older company (much larger). Here, though, it appears most people don’t get their first promotion until the 5.5 to 8 year mark, which is disappointing. A lot of folks after that seem to either stay in the senior adjuster role long term, change departments, or look at the supervisor spot around the 10-12 year mark. It’s unfortunate, but I see what you’re getting at for potential long term issues.

At small companies, it can be much harder to be promoted. That is honestly one of the benefits of a bigger company. I would probably be looking for something at a bigger company if I were you.

I really want to get a second job but I am scared of losing my current one. Both companies are in same field, although not direct competitors so I know it’s technically “not allowed” however, this is the only way for me to get that $$ since I am not paid all that well.

Of course I won’t tell a single friend/coworker. Only my partner. And I don’t post work stuff on social media.

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Thanks in advance :)

I've done so well in this new role within the company that they are hiring another person to assist with what I do. I've voiced to my boss that I'd like to manage this department and they indicated that this is the thought for the future. Now they are asking me to train this person while I have my plate full. Is it wrong for me to expect either a promotion or to be paid to train this person?

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!
