I’d rather be a mostly trad wife now that my kids are grown! I work less than 1/2 time outside the home. Talk to your partner about the expenses you wouldn’t have (and remember taxes/FICA/FUTA/childcare in the conversation). It may be doable with just a part-time salary (or no salary). Housekeeping help of $500/month requires upwards of $1,000 of pre-tax earnings to pay them. Eating meals at home with less expensive ingredients is key to making SAH doable. Caviar and king crab aren’t foods you should be picking. Really, someone needs to write a book on part-time work for making a modern family work tax efficiently. I work for $23.5K retirement contributions for myself, and $23.5K for my husband, $8,550 HSA (for the family), and $6,000 of healthcare contributions in my paycheck. Anything more isn’t really worth it for us, so I cut out those hours. No one asks on resumes whether you were part time or full time, so you don’t end up with a gap. Leaves of absence also don’t count against you on a resume. Use all the tricks you have at your disposal to create the life you want. Living below your means is a key aspect to that. Cars depreciate. Craigslist is your friend to make sure you buy used items others paid full price for. OK, time to get off my soapbox and on to prepping my hasselback sage potatoes with BLT wedge salad and roasted chicken. I had time to vacuum the house, wash the laundry, and prep dinner because I only worked 4 hours vs 10-11. Saving $115 on dinner out, $50 on laundry service, and $50 worth of maid service means I had 4 hours not working to do that instead. Don’t think you’ll be eating bon bons though! Trad wife is still work!
