Try to do a pre summer internship. Heck offer to work for the summer at an alums place for free. Also if you’re at the S part of HSW this will be easier than the HW parts as their alumni networks are not as tightly knit due to size. You will have a very hard time doing this from W
Mentor
Are you at H/S or W? Different odds. If you’re W, prep for interviews like any associate, target LMM funds, and network hard.
Understood, thank you both.
PE is the root of all evil.
No, PE is simply a manifestation of inefficient private markets and broken tax policy. Corrupt politicians are the root of all evil
You need either ib experience, pe experience, or nepotism
Have you done a PEG stint?
Yes, a year
You need to get an in-semester internship (might need to be unpaid) prior to the first summer to even be considered. Even then your chances are low, I only saw this happen for 2 people in my school with no IB pre-MBA experience
Thanks, what kind of firms even offer these? Small regional LMMs?
In reflecting on previous comments, I feel compelled to share my own experience, tactfully. In 2010, with a background in the financial services sector that included management and leadership roles in sales and operations, as well as an MBA. In addition, I had accumulated over five years of hands-on experience in accounts receivable and accounts payable across two small industrial companies. At that time, I had done research and called the office directly. I was advised that only graduates from top-tier institutions, particularly USC and UCLA, were considered for opportunities in the field. Not favorable to have heard that indeed.
It is beyond intriguing to observe how perceptions have evolved since then.
@ Manager 2: Hopefully it was earned earnestly, congrats.
There are a few funds that are open to hiring people without PE experience and say it in their internship postings (eg gauge capital). Suggest you try to find those ones out early (talk to second years at your school) and network hard. Obviously be polished on modeling / interview prep stuff.
Lastly, be very wide with your search. If you’re set on NYC firms with >5B fund sizes, it’s going to be tough. Being open to different geo’s / fund sizes will help in potentially finding somewhere that’ll take a chance on someone without prior experience
