i am a tax accountant. i, and people in positions well above me, have visible tattoos (many of them!). the concept that having tattoos is unprofessional is outdated, in my opinion (as long as they aren’t overtly suggestive or rude in nature).
Depends on your industry. Marketing? Creative? Go for it. Accounting? Banking? Not visible.
The closer you work with clients money, the more conservative your clients want you to be.
Artist, creative director - go for it.
Banker, financial advisor- make it not visible
Depending on size you could always cover with a watch or bracelet for client meetings.
I have a tattoo on my wrist - it's never been an issue. I work in consulting, but focus on defense; I agree that some industries will care a lot more than others.
Make sure that you at least have the option to have it covered.
I have 7 tattoos and one of them is on my ankle and is visible when I wear skirts without tights. It has never been an issue at work. I like that I have the option to cover it up though.
Times are changing, but we can’t control who still sees things from an old-fashioned/conservative viewpoint.
