I was asked to do a trial shift at a cafe with no paperwork yet. They said it was to see if I fit the team. Is that normal now, and did anyone actually get hired after a trial like that?

Some places will do that and they will hire people. They'll say it's the only way to make sure that someone can do the job, and they may have a point. Just make sure you're getting paid for the shift regardless of how it works out. Do a good job and it should work out well for you.

Trial shifts are normal, but it’s become common to be paid for your trail. If you’re not filling out any paperwork, that means you’re not going to be paid. And they may be required to do so. I’d look into it…

Yeah, that’s become pretty common, especially in cafes and restaurants. Many people do get hired after a trial shift, but always make sure they’re clear about pay and expectations beforehand.

Considering a move from NYC to SF and my office will be in Palo Alto. Any advice on potential neighborhoods to live in without needing a car? Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.
