I think we can be proactive about letting people know about resources, but it's not exactly our place to individually check in on the burnout of all of our employees. All we can do is make sure that they understand the channels of communication and resources for help. And also giving managers more tools to recognize burnout when they see it
That’s a fair point. You can’t micromanage wellbeing, but giving managers the tools and creating a culture where burnout isn’t brushed aside goes a long way.
My friends in the UK say the NHS is absolutely falling apart :( Breaks my heart, because it was an incredible service when I lived there years ago. I think one of the first methods of mental health support they should be implementing is simply funding healthcare properly. Hire enough people so that all emergencies can be attended to and no one has to work ridiculous hours. I think that's the best place to start for most industries. Stop expecting employees to do the job of 3 people.
It’s heartbreaking to see how underfunded the NHS has become. You can’t talk about wellbeing if people are drowning in workload — staffing properly is step one.
We have had similar issues in the US with emergency dispatch. They are put in the middle of dire situations, not only with the hours they have to work, but imagine the absolute horror stories they have to hear, and that’s just a regular workday! The conversation needs to start with them and what can help to support such an overlooked thing.
Emergency roles carry such emotional weight, yet we rarely hear them mentioned in wellbeing plans. Listening to them should be the first move, not an afterthought.
Rising Star
It's a hard job for anyone to take the emergency phone calls. Some of them must be quite distressing. They should do checking meetings like they do performance reviews, but just for your mental health.
If we do performance reviews, why not normalise support reviews too?

Definatly should considering a mental health well-being as well as a performance review as their mental health may be a factor on their performance. Also I would suggest having some mental health first aiders in the company that people are aware of and they can go to them for help if they feel comfortable so they know as a company you care.
Absolutely agree. Mental health check-ins should be as routine as performance reviews. It shows people they're seen as human, not just workers. And having visible, approachable mental health first aiders can make a huge difference in creating that supportive culture.
