I did. Sometimes you need a new start. And if you’re worried about leaving your network, I would posit that the fact you’re thinking of leaving may be evidence that network may not really be as valuable as you think.
If you weren’t keeping up your end of the deal, would firm keep you around?
Very well said
I know of some also. I think it’s worth it if you get the run around at your current firm. Sometimes politics get in the way and starting fresh is best. Only you can know if that’s your situation
I did - but it took me 6 years after the switch to make it. I was still probably 2-3 years out best case at my old firm.
Had to rebuild my network and my case. But it’s a marathon and not a sprint and I don’t regret it. Better positioned for the long haul.
Yes 6 years after the switch.
Are you looking for direct admit or for a lateral move with a chance to make partner elsewhere?
I’m sure examples of the former exist, but I don’t see them and when I have any connection to the hire, I’d never do it. My basic premise is that your current firm knows more about you than I do, so the odds that my limited evaluation is right and they’re more informed evaluation is wrong seem low. I’m sure that means I miss out on partner-ready people, but type 1 and type 2 hiring errors are not equivalent.
I’ve definitely seen lateral hires who then made it to partner at my firm some time later (2 years or so)
Best of luck with your path forward!
When I see pre-partner candidates make the lateral move, it’s always with a longer range outlook. If you’re doing well; are confident that you have a clear partner path at your firm, and would like being a partner at your firm, staying is a good choice.
If being a partner at your current firm in your current domain doesn’t look so awesome or if you have lost trust that your firm will promote you, that’s where a pre-partner lateral can make sense. May delay the promotion, but not all partner jobs are created equal
I sit on the external partner review committee at my firm, and I can tell you that Pr1’s perspectives are spot on with my own. I also work closely with another Partner who followed a path like P2’s, and for whom I think the delay, while frustrating along the way, did give him a chance to reposition in a way that will be very fruitful long-term. So don’t think of this as a way to accelerate your path, but if you have concerns about the long term future of your current path, this may still be a good time to switch.
I’ve seen it at Accenture if you’re willing to go there. But in his case he was a boomerang. Left for pwc to become a Director and then came back to Accenture after 3 years or so as a MD. I’d say if you have 4 or so years at the Director level you could potentially jump to Partner or MD/ED at a competitor, assuming you’re willing to make the commitment of the intense sales targets that will be put in front of you. Can’t be easy to hit without the network to help.
Thanks everyone. This is really helpful. I’m in a specialty service group and my firm has the biggest / most developed practice per the ALM vanguard studies, so I’m hoping I can translate the small fish in a big pond to be big fish in a smaller pond in a less developed practice which I can then help build... would love to have more impact and my group has gotten so big in the last 10 years it’s harder to do that....
I know few who did.
Thanks. What about as a direct admit— is that really rare? Possible??
I believe there a decent number of direct admits every year at all Big 4 though most of them maybe lateral transfers. You will prob need a strong supporter at your competitor to make a case for you to be considered for a direct admit partner with a promotion.
