Classroom management is a challenge especially at the Middle School level. I am hardly a person to lecture on this topic, but I would caution relying on the classroom shaming too much, in my experience students eventually internalize it, and give up trying to be good. I tend to rely on procedures and routines, when is it okay to sharpen my pencil, how does working in groups look like, how to talk to my peers without put downs, and then practicing these skills. In your previous post you mentioned a 70% grading rule a solution that might work is to make participation part of the grade. This does make the grades higher, on average, and encourages following the procedures and routines. I suggest checking out videos and books by Harry Wong, "First Days of School." His series on classroom management, gives real practical guidelines as opposed to the theory we often get elsewhere.
Having been a kid myself who sometimes acted out, this seems a bit harsh. I personally wouldn't use it very often but I'm glad it worked for you.
I think that it's a good tool to use as long as it's not used on a regular basis. I say this because eventually, those students aren't going to care that their names are being checked off. I remember this from when I was a middle schooler. It didn't continue to work on the disruptive kids if it was used every day.
agree! It's a tool, sparingly used, can be effective, if you have follow up one on ones with said student...and it depends on the student, and what expectations they deal with at home. If their parents don't care, then old school stuff doesn't work,but if the kids have some sort of investment in their educational outcome...as long as we teachers keep trying! Good work!
