I think the removal of USAID can be linked to some deaths, for sure, as well as a lot of suffering. But I have always been ASTOUNDED by the way defenders of USAID (and equivalent large government funding of aid) defend not just the good uses of the money but also the bad ones.
When some people say ‘USAID is a waste because of this list of terrible projects, the defenders never say ‘JFC you’re right. That should never have happened. But what about these good things’.
Instead they just say something like ‘how dare you challenge USAID. You must be a fascist.’
They just cannot bring themselves to accept that, sadly, billions are wasted each year and it just has to stop.

I know a lot of people who worked at USAID and many of them were extremely high achievers on shoestring budgets - the benefits far outweighed the costs

Amazing how many people (as evidenced by the responses above) have literally no idea how USAID was destroyed with absolutely no humanity or foresight. We destroyed warehouses full of food rather than let other aid groups distribute it. Destroyed millions of dollars worth of birth control rather than have it distributed for free. And even if you think it was a "leftist slush fund" (I'll bet you're real pissed off about Trump's Jan 6 slush fund lol) that was approved by an overwhelming majority in Congress, you can acknowledge that it projected American soft power around the world which we have now ceded to China. Let's see how you feel if Ebola comes to the US.
