No nothing about this topic or am involved...but recently saw a CNN Journalist call a Foreign Minister “anti Semitic” when he said “Israel has deep pockets” and “controlling the media”

Can anyone explain why this is anti Semitic? It was targeted at Israel (not Jewish people, although they comprise much of Israel) but seemed to me to be a critique. Did not sound anti-Semitic to me.

The ideas that Jewish people control wealth and the media are well worn anti-Semitic tropes, and applying it to Israel instead of all Jewish people is at best one level of abstraction.

This was very specific to Israel bombings and not anything “Jewish” related. I understand if the trope of using Israelis as an abstraction for Jews but in this case the context was very clear and not abstracting to Jews

Hey there OP, Hoping your question is coming from a good natured/genuinely inquisitive position considering you’re not familiar with historically anti-Semitic phrases/stereotypes. Here’s a pretty good resource to learn about common anti-Semitic terms/phrases/tropes, including many that were used by Hitler/the Nazis to propagate Jewish hate before and during the Holocaust (I.e the notion that Jews had too much control, were greedy/power hungry, etc) https://www.ajc.org/sites/default/files/pdf/2021-02/AJC_Translate-Hate-Glossary-2021.pdf
Such phraseology, when used against Israel (a majority Jewish country often misconstrued as interchangeable with worldwide Jewry) is at BEST in poor taste, but more realistically anti-Semitic. Unfortunately, with all the misinformation being spread about the situation and the moral equivalence frequently being drawn between Israel (the only democracy in the Middle East) and Hamas in Gaza (a recognized terrorist organization), anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about control and world domination are only being furthered and have led to a huge uptick in anti-Jewish attacks worldwide in the last couple weeks. (This Forbes article provides some pretty horrific examples: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/05/20/synagogue-attacks-and-slurs-jewish-community-rocked-by-rise-in-anti-semitism-amid-israel-gaza-fighting/amp/). It’s extremely important for ppl to be careful about rhetoric used in these situations considering how much violence has been incited historically (and currently) as a result.

The ideas of Jews controlling money and the media are some of the oldest anti-Semitic canards on earth.

likehelpful

The comment was referring to money and power that has been a a target towards Jews since biblical times due to money lending and then being able to practice it. It is anti-Semitic and referring to Israel just shows the dynamic about what’s going on with Israel. Not wading into what’s going on right now over there, but that was anti Semitic and good for her to call him on it.

Hmm ok I sort of see your point but feel it’s still a bit of a stretch. After reading the narrative on both sides this conflict is more about land than religion. And most of the narrative across both sides has been devoid of hate towards each other’s religions (which is quite frankly a good thing)

As described by many authors in many publications, criticizing the policy of the Israeli government is considered anti-Semitic by the mainstream press in the US.

I think the term is being overapplied, similarly to the word racism (I don't mean to be cute or snarky in saying this), where folks are using it to slander the other without addressing the real issue.

It does though depend on whether this contributor has a history of saying things without proper evidence. Think this conflict and the conversations about it are complex and people may immediately assume racism (Paletinse) or anti-semitism (Israel). To be frank, I am hopeful in the more humanitarian (if you can say that) stance the media took this time on the real cost to normal, everyday folks suffering the most.

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!
