I work at a chain store and want to move to a different location for more hours. Is it better to apply internally or quit and reapply externally to be taken seriously?

Apply internally. That’s usually better. See if your boss will support your move. If you quit, it looks worse.

That’s very true! I guess if he doesn’t then I could always go the other way?

Apply internally. They will more than likely support your transfer. The other will leave a bad taste, as it almost feels sneaky and not professional

Yes manager 3 I agree! It would realistically be stipid of me to do that!

It would be tough to explain quitting and then reapplying immediately. You might even be marked ineligible for rehire if not done correctly. Easier to do an internal apply, but you have to be consistent in following up with it. Would there be a possibility of getting more hours where you currently are?

When working in jobs transfers usually easier but it really depends!! Don’t think quitting and reapplying is going to help!

Applying internally is usually the better first move—it keeps your tenure, benefits, and shows you’re trying to grow within the company. That said, if internal requests keep getting ignored or blocked, quitting and reapplying externally can sometimes get more traction. It really depends on how supportive your management is.

Yeah I think you’re right and applying internally is gonna help me more!

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
