Billables are low this month. Like I have 65 billable hours in so far. I’ve messaged partners over the last week to try and get more cases but there are tons of new associates who were just onboarded and were at a low point for business. I’m freaking out

In a similar boat here. But don't freak out. Use this time to work on pro bono matters, take on internal firm projects, or to see your family. Business ebbs and flows. This is normal.

Thanks - I’ve been focusing on knocking out CLEs. I’ve never been this low before so it’s throwing me for a loop

It will all come out in the wash—it’s only February. Enjoy the slow times while you can.

What kind of work do you do, maybe the rest of the bowl can help you find billable events

I can't tell if Atty2 is F***ing with me or not, and I'll absolutely take a 1.2 here, but really feel that full value is a 1.8 ;)

It will even out. Take you time while you can. If it doesn’t even out - that’s on the partners and not you. There is plenty to stress about as an associate. The firm not having enough work to keep everyone busy is not your fault. And they will let the new associates who know nothing go way before you if it comes to downsizing. But I don’t think it will. And again - take the downtime when it’s available. Because you have no choice but to work your face off when it’s not.

like

Stop worrying. You mentioned it to partners so now it’s their job. Enjoy the light work and do stuff you enjoy instead of stressing

Use the time to be very proactive in business development and networking, or reinforce relationships with existing clients and see if you can drum up some biz. If you are successful in bringing in some new biz it will set you apart from the other associates too.

One way to do this would be to offer to put on a CLE presentation for some of your clients with an in-house legal team. Privacy is an evolving area of law and CLE updates in this field are always helpful for in-house law departments. You can usually count your time preparing the CLE presentation towards your own CLE requirements too.

Pretty sure you may be at my firm ;) January and February are often slower in the privacy/cyber world unless a huge event happens. I was in the same boat last year then the flood gates opened! Keep your chin up and just keep on letting the partners know you need work. We can’t create cases, but we can offer an ear and at least will be aware that you are trying to get the work! Reach out to me if you’d like.

Work on business development stuff - write articles, find somewhere to present, attend networking events. If you have a marketing/bus dev department, ask for their help.

If they just hired a bunch of people, they are expecting a lot more work. You can’t get too focused on the month to month. This is a long game.

Chill out. I had 200 plus hours in January and literally only 55 this month. Calm down and live your life. It will pick back up soon and you will miss this time

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable?
