I work for a small company (40 FTE’s) in Houston, Texas. We have a male accountant demanding to work from home two weeks before his baby is born then 2 weeks of leave, then work from home indefinitely. He recently tried to quit and was given a $70k raise. Good employee but not the most productive. What leave would your company allow this new father? Note: we are not required to comply with FMLA.

I would create a standard policy and practice to honor the parameter's of FMLA. That way you can stick to the 12 weeks, unpaid leave offering. You're close to 50, so it's something you'll have to do eventually. Also, people have needs regardless of your company size - denying them this will just make them go work for a larger organization with better benefits.

$70k raise?? Are you hiring?

First mistake...paying him to stay. That cycle will never end. Having a baby is a big deal so as much as you can try to accommodate his request. If you allow the permanent work from home be prepared for others wanting the same. If you don't want WFH employees or don't want it as a work option then don't start. Employers are going thru hell trying to get away from WFH since covid.

I’ve been a licensed general lines (2-20) insurance agent for year and a half and have sold around 2M in premium, of which most of it is personal lines (homeowners, DP), and some commercial lines business. Even though I’m licensed to write my own business, the sole producer in the company is my boss. I currently make 35k + 15k in commissions (approximately). Is this a normal salary? Or how much should I be making? Appreciate your help
