I'd appreciate some opinions on this situation: A PE firm is extending an offer for a PE Ops role, but the structure is that I'd be classified as a 1099 contractor rather than a W2 employee, unlike the rest of the deal team, who are all W2. I have concerns regarding health insurance, workers' comp, maternity/paternity leave, PTO, sick leave, and visa considerations. Additionally, I don’t have a partner I can rely on for health insurance coverage. Is this a red flag?

It is a concern, you have to figure out if it is worth it. Is the comp high enough that you can take care of all the taxes as well as health insurance by yourself? I assume this means no carry as well. The PE firms which have done this all seem to not value Ops very much. Are you the only 1099, or are there others?

I would be the 1099. I think the fact I’m on a visa means this is a non-starter. I’m going to try negotiate

Sounds like a major red flag to me. You’ll be contractor and firms churn those out as soon as there is no need for them any longer. I would not leave BCG and all your perks to be a second class citizen at a firm who clearly doesn’t value their Ops team.

I have total 11 years of experience in IT (Enterprise applications:Oracle Weblogic) and 4 years in DevOps, Git, Google Cloud, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes. Currently working with Accenture India. Sounds like a major red flag to me. You’ll be contractor and firms churn those out as soon as there is no need for them any longer. I would not leave BCG and all your perks to be a second class citizen at a firm who clearly doesn’t value their Ops team.
