Maybe if they 1. want to keep you (“expected opportunity” is nothing certain) 2. No one can easily replace you 3. There is retention budget available (there was none over past years below MD for most groups)
Told my manager last week I have an offer and will be leaving. Spoke briefly about the new role and they were very nice etc but not once did they ask the package. How can they counter if they don’t ask!

Never seen anyone retained with a pay rise in Accenture. We do have retention bonus that's one-off.
I wouldn’t recommend this strategy for a pay rise , if it comes in genuinely and you’d want to leave then do this , but often they’ll say to move if you’re after the money

Why did you apply for another role if you want to stay? Why invest energy in applying for something ? if money is your answer then I suggest to leave

Can you elaborate? What do you mean they were let go? Presumably not just because they had an external offer that would seem strange
