If I was a second or third choice candidate for a role, and ultimately got an offer, is it fair game to inquire with the recruiter as to why the initial candidates declined? And should this fact weigh into my decision process?

You can ask but they likely won’t tell you and they may also not know. Could be that the place is toxic or low balling but the candidates who declined might have said they have another offer. If you have concerns I’d try to find someone who recently worked there who you can ask.

Learned I was making less than peers at other asset managers in NYC with less experience (14 years). Latest conversation was with HR about how they calculate salaries. I’ve been asked to provide examples how my role has changed since I started to justify the increase. Is this normal? Or is this just their way of denying my request?

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

I work as in house counsel, and a lot of the employees are not qualified for their position and don’t understand legal/compliance even though they’ve been trained and should be competent enough to understand. Does anybody else feel like this or have advice on how to get through to those difficult people?

Need a sanity check here.

When I joined my current company, we were on a quarterly bonus structure with guaranteed payouts each quarter. This was, in fact, how the recruiter said he could meet my salary request.

The company just announced we are moving to annual payouts only, with no payments for 2023 until May 2024. There are no raises happening.

This amounts to 12% less money in my pocket in 2023 plus inflation.

Is this standard, or should I be looking for opportunities elsewhere?

Considering an offer to go from firm (4 YOE) to become a privacy/product counsel for a tech company (non-faang).
