If someone wants to quit advertising, let them.

This industry is going to shrink, and it’s filled with people who openly hate it and complain constantly about their choice of career. Don’t encourage them to stick it out. Let them leave and hopefully be happier elsewhere.

People who love doing this type of work are hunting for jobs right now, and will be for years. It’s okay to reserve encouragement for people who want to be here.

No they can’t quit?!!!

I won’t let them!!! 😡 😤 😡

Not sure I understand your opening, for one. Who’s actually begging them to stay?

Beyond that, while I agree the industry will shrink and offer less opportunity, I think the characterization of “complainers” here is a little uncharitable. There are a lot of people who love doing the work but bemoan the long list of perpetual systemic problems within this particular industry. They could be staff that got laid off so their agency could make room in the budget for entry fees and flying execs to Cannes, or a new mom that got demoted or let go after mat leave, or hardworking people who got pushed out of their employment just for the crime of reaching a certain biological age, or people that have to sleep at the office so they can spend more time crafting bullshit awards case study videos for work that never actually existed this way or never actually performed that way, in addition tending to reams of actual billable client work with woefully understaffed teams.

I don’t believe that having a dialogue around these kinds of very legitimate problems is bad. Sometimes if enough people get fed up it might just lead to positive change.

I agree that there are many people who hate the bullshit but love the work. That’s not what I’m talking about, we need more of those people. Trying to fix something is often the biggest sign of commitment.

But 70% of posts here about the industry are “it’s garbage, it’s evil, get out while you can” which isn’t constructive or productive.

@OP I’d bet $100 you’re less than 5 years into your career and have no mortgage or family to support.

I prefer to be round in a world of squares... and rectangles.

A little tone deaf and preachy. Maybe pump the brakes there hotshot.

There are thousands of people in this industry, mid-career, who have mortgages and kids that need monthly financial upkeep, and a skill set that won’t get them paid enough in another role to do that. So in other words, trapped. This is also the cohort that mostly remembers when you would work ungodly hours, BUT this industry could still charge healthily for well crafted, well thought out and genuinely fun work - which no longer really exists.

But if working on V13 on a deck for an influencer-adjacent “idea” that is concept empty and comes with 10,000 deliverables is your idea of loving this industry, go and get it.

You can only live your own life. Some people love NY some people find it a sweaty rats nest that eats you alive. Some people love country music, others love fine dining, or free solo rock climbing. What I think any those things is what I think about those things, but they shouldn’t matter if you love them. It’s fine to share your POV but it’s all so subjective that it actually makes no difference big picture. If you’re happy with your career, keep it up, if you’re not getting what you need, try something new.

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Is our industry as competitive as some say? I see a lot of people saying this and I work with a bunch of hacks (myself included). It felt like a little while ago agencies were begging to hire new talent, and most couldn’t find new people. Is it really that hard to get a job at an agency? Maybe I’m just out of touch being in this career for so long.
