It matter where you’re usually flying to. I’m in LA and American, United and Delta have tons of flights but if I know I’m going to Chicago it’s got to be United. If Atlanta it’s Delta, Dallas-American. I’ve bounced in and out of status for all three and while I try to stick with United I’ve had to trade out if I know it’s going to be a long term project elsewhere…you can only get away with so many connecting flights to retain status on your priority airline before it wears on you.
It seems like it gets tough to track though…
Whichever route you frequent and they cover the majority of the regular flights. So preferably flights you frequent privately and through work to maximize. For me that's SAS Eurobonus (Singapore Airlines, SAS, Nippon Air, United)

Unfortunately, I agree, it's very dependent on your region. For me, my best is Alaska Airlines. But that's also because I fly in and out of Alaska frequently throughout the year. They do have other airlines that operate in and out of Anchorage, but nothing quite like Alaska.
