I did exactly that. At 50 I was headhunted into a completely non-creative role at a large corporate technology-based MNC. The role required me to develop a new business line around in-housing and offshoring basic creative services. No concepts or headlines required - ever. But it opened my eyes to looking at our business from a completely different perspective - which sometimes required me looking at spread sheets and pretending I understood them. I will say that, on my first day in the job, wearing my newly bought business shirt and pants and having to set up a windows laptop with 5 or 6 different passwords, I was thinking I had made a big mistake. And it took me around 6 months to get my head round the fact that I ‘wasn’t a creative’ anymore. But I adapted and really enjoyed the job and get 3 month bonuses as opposed to no bonuses previously was quite a novelty. Ironically, after 5 years, I ended up going back to being a CD, but this time in in-house roles. During this time I learned that many of the skills, connection, conceptual ability and ways of thinking - particularly if you are a copywriter - are very useful (and rare) in a corporate role. (It’s why ‘Design Thinking’ programs are so pervasive in corporates.) But you have to be lucky enough to come across a recruiter or hiring manager who understands this.
Amazing experience… I have thought of that what would I do, but I don’t know anything else. Been a “creative” my whole life….
Start by asking yourself this question: if you could do anything at all and money was not a deciding factor, what would you do? Then ask yourself, why? Why did you pick that thing? If you do that, you’ll have a good direction to follow.
