Sounds like semantics to me. Business Development and Sales are pretty similar, depending on the company, and what good is being an Associate anything versus an Exec? Just my opinion. I wouldn't stress.
Maybe the new Sales Exec just started, but do you know how many years of sales experience he or she had? If they are truly entry level, then that's a bit odd. But otherwise, if they also have 3 or so years of sales experience, I wouldn't consider it a demotion. You can always ask your manager if it really bothers you.
The new person came in with 1yr of sales experience.
It feels like a demotion and it will look like a demotion in your resume. With the change of title are you getting more money, bigger territory or more responsibilities? If the answer is not, and given the fact that you have been longer in your position ask for the Senior in the title
My primary concern wouldn't necessarily be with the level of each title, but the actual role. Biz Dev is quite different from sales. Any reason they're moving you over? That would be what I'd be questioning.
They said the Sales Executive title is more representative of the work I do and my responsibilities, yet haven’t provided a definition of how that varies from what they’d consider BD. Almost as if they realized they had previously assigned the wrong nomenclature. How would you define the differences between BD and Sales?

Your other title sounds like something Dwight would use in the Office.
How does that make you feel better?
