Mentor
I would have gone into medicine and started my own practice. Tech has been super exciting but the hustle and constant evolution required to stay nimble and relevant catches up with you. It is incredibly unstable industry and I feel like a professional job seeker since I find myself looking for work every 2 years due to layoffs, unhealthy environments, and contract renewal.
This has been on my mind lately. Top this off with multi layers of biases woc have to go through at workplace. It’s a constant battle and exhausting. I’m still trying to crack the code but there is just 24hrs and limited time and energy. The cards are pretty much stacked against in concrete. If I had known I would have gone through the route of having my own business sort of.
I would have completed more internships in college and applied for a fellowship after grad school, paid more attention in my finance courses, networked as much as possible and leveraged professional relationships, and sought mentorship earlier in my career. I was recently promoted to overseeing a few medical divisions at a university hospital, but I can’t help but think how much farther along I would be knowing what I know now about relationship building. Hard work pays off, but who you know plays a large part in advancement.
Studied something more lucrative and less geared towards academia
My degree had a 5 year plan for BBA and MBA. I would have done it.
I would have moved schools and tried to get into MIT. And get internships.
I should have also taken summer school while in high school to take the advanced math in high school or just do my high school courses at the local community college.
Graduate to become something - developer, doctor, nurse, etc. rather than just trying to graduate.
Then, I would have also focused on attending more of my friends weddings and special events instead of always prioritizing work.
Lesson learned.
