Based on the comp and the actual city. Higher comp at a higher cost of living place doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better job. I would also consider the potential of the new place vs the current place. Is it fast growing, does it provide more upward potential for both of you, is the city good with education resource for your children if you have any, etc. If moving makes a lot of sense, I would ask your spouse to negotiate and make sure he doesn’t have to move immediately. Better not move until you find sth in the new city. Usually companies can accommodate that.
Yeah I’ve been through this personally.
I was in the same company as my spouse and our company split into two. His part will no longer be in the city we live in, and my half won’t be keep me for long. So he negotiated a deal that we will move once I find a new job in the new location. Worked out super well, I got a new job with a huge salary bump in a lower cost of living area with lower taxes.
We had a couple of options and we chose the city that we thought had the biggest potential. Only the money we made in housing has justified that move well already. We’re both thriving in our careers too. Best decision ever.
Would honestly come down to compensation for me. Is he making enough to support the family or enough that I’m willing to change careers for myself for this move?

That’s a super honest take, and I appreciate it. I’ve definitely thought about what kind of compensation would make a move feel worth it for both of us. Really at the heart of it I just think in terrified of making any changes.
I think we would decide this together based on numbers and what is best for our family. There'd be no scenario in which he would take a job somewhere that I would not join him in. We would stay together because we'd make a shared decision about what would be best
I guess we'd just have to sit with it for a long time and do a big pros and cons list. We have kids, so in our case I think it would ultimately come down to what is best for them rather than either of our personal preferences. We've never been in a total stalemate with a decision like this, so I guess I'd trust that we'd eventually come to a good solution

Absolutely! If it is a really big deal to them, then I would 100% go. As long as your partner would do the same for you!
